MGM Mirage will double the number of gaming tables for high-rollers in its Macau casino by the end of the year in order to make the most of the increasing number of players who spend more than 124,000 dollars per visit. MGM Grand Macau is a joint venture of the MGM Company and Pansy Ho, daughter of tycoon Stanley Ho.
CEO Terrence Lanni said in a press conference held this week that the company will increase the number of VIP tables from 70 to 150. Macao obtained almost 70 per cent of its gaming profits from VIP Players, defined as those who spend more than 124,000 dollars per trip. This is more than the 67 per cent they spent in 2006, even when city authorities were looking to attract more high-rollers to Macao, the only place in China where gambling is legal.
“We have determined that it would be important to add more VIP tables,” Lanni said. “After making a balance, we are not satisfied with the performance of our Macao property, but we believe we are taking the necessary steps.” The casino currently has 366 gaming tables. Lanni explained the casino will add 22 VIP tables this week.
The idea to have more VIP players helped improve this market in MGM Macao a 9.5 per cent in July, compared to an 8 per cent in the previous month. “Junket” operators take good gamblers to Macao casinos, charging commissions that vary according to the money bet by clients. “Since we adopted the MGM Mirage marketing in June this year, we have doubled the number of VIP clients and we think this may continue growing,” Lanni commented.
