Despite acknowledging that Blackpool’s economy is going through a rough time, Prime Minister Gordon Brown announced his decision to discard the building of a super-casino in the resort. "As far as two large super-casinos are concerned, I've said I feel there are better ways of regenerating those areas and that's what we're looking at the moment,” the Minister said during his monthly press conference.
Brown also explained that Hazel Blears, the Secretary of State for Local Government, is coordinating the work about what the government can do to help Manchester and Blackpool. He accepted that the resort has specific challenges it has to meet in the near future.
A few months ago, Blackpool councilors endorsed plans to build two casinos in the city, as part of a remodeling project of the old Central Station. The project was submitted by the town’s development agency ReBlackpool, but needed the approval of the UK government.
In June, the plans for the super-casino were exhibited during two days at the Central Station site and more than 1,000 people saw them. The designs for a 30-storey hotel and casino, which had been compared with the luxurious Burj Al Arab hotel in Dubai, will now be filed due to the government’s decision.
